Rotator Cuff Injury

Picture

The rotator cuff

The group of muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder responsible for movement and keeping the shoulder within the socket is known as the rotator cuff. When the muscles within the rotator cuff becomes injured or torn it can be quite painful and reduce range of motion.

Causes

Rotator cuff injuries have two main causes:
  1. Injury - After a fall putting pressure on the shoulder or lifting a heavy object, especially in conjunction with a previous shoulder or back injury can cause the muscles in the rotator cuff to tear painfully.
  2. Degenerative - The tendons, usually in the dominant arm, begin to degenerate over time from day to day use. Some factors that may contribute to natural degeneration may be repetitive motions, lack of blood supply due to age, and bone spurs.

Prevention & Treatment

Picture
Prevention of rotator cuff injury or preventing further injury to an already injured rotator cuff or shoulder can generally be achieved through daily stretching and building muscle strength especially for those between 30-50 years old who begin to be at higher risk for rotator cuff injury or those who play sports or work in fields that require shoulder and back strain. Using a Sonic Relief for injured shoulders and backs can also prevent more serious rotator cuff injury such as tearing that could require surgery.

Torn and injured rotator cuffs can be treated with Sonic Relief using the ultrasound device for 10 minutes on the medium-high setting 3 times daily will increase blood flow to the injured rotator cuff and begin the healing process for tears in the muscles and tendons.
